Develop a mobile color scheme that satisfies user taste while also being functional and accessible.

Solution

A sleek, dark UI theme that is easy on the eyes of warehouse workers, while remaining legible enough to read content quickly

Results

Users were thrilled with the new design, and communicated that the app felt "more modern".

Background

FCTools is an app that fulfillment center workers use to track their job's progress and get information in real time. It was designed independently of our design system, so my job was to create a color system that visually unified our mobile and desktop platforms.

UI Color Experiments

I started by grabbing one screen from the current app and applying several different color themes to it. This rapid ideation allowed me to get lots of different ideas into the mix.

A/B Testing

After deciding the two best color schemes, I applied them both to multiple other screens from the app in order to make a mock flow. I took this out to the warehouse to ask employees which one they preferred.

Color Guide

The deliverable was a color guide that other designers and developers could reference when working on the app. This included guidelines for how to use the color scheme as well as certain navigational and iconographic elements.
